Six-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi has been branded ‘overrated’ by an angry Liverpool fan – who insists Virgil van Dijk was more deserving of this year’s award.
The Barcelona superstar pipped the Liverpool defender to the award at a ceremony in Paris on Monday night.
The gong caps off a wonderful calendar year for Messi, who also claimed the Best FIFA Men’s award back in September.
The 32-year-old Argentine scored 54 times for club and country during the 2018/19 campaign as Barcelona won the LaLiga title.
And while few can argue against a player widely considered the greatest of all time being named the footballer of the year, it’s clear people on Merseyside will not be happy about the result.
And Will the Red called into The Sports Bar on Monday night to vent his outrage, saying Messi is merely the best ever player to play in Spain, ‘and that’s it’.
“For winning the Champions League and the effect he’s had at Liverpool, Van Dijk should have won the Ballon d’Or,” began Will.
And from here, well, we’ll leave any judgement up to you…
“Messi is a great player, but he’s only done it in LaLiga,” he continued.
“He’s only done it in a league where really there are only two teams involved; it’s like Scotland with Celtic and Rangers.
“I’d love to see how good he is in the Premier League, because when he faced Liverpool last season he did diddly-squat
“Messi is overrated. I think Cristiano Ronaldo, and this is from a Liverpool fan, I think Ronaldo is such a better player than because he’s done it in different leagues.
“It makes him a better footballer because he can adapt his style depending on the league he plays in.
“Messi is the best player who has ever played in LaLiga, and that is it.
“Would I swap Mo Salah for Messi? No not at all. He’s a cry baby as well!”
