Medical staff at St James’ Park will assess Lascalles’ recovery but the report states he is expected to miss two or three months of action at the very least.

The news will come as a massive blow for Steve Bruce following the club’s mini-revival in recent weeks, where they have picked up ten out of 15 points from their last five games.

The 26-year-old has started every Premier League match this campaign, scoring one goal.

Th injury occurred after Callum Wilson’s nudge sent him flying into Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka in the opening stages of the 2-1 win.

And although there were hoped of a quick recovery, Lascelles ultimately could not carry on and hobbled off without the help of a stretcher.

Fortunately for Bruce, Florian Lejeune is set to return from a long-term injury in the coming weeks, while his his other centre-backs Ciaran Clark and Federico Fernandes have been in good form in recent matches.
