The 33-year-old remarkably described his new team as ‘nothing impressive’, before blaming the gaffe on his lack of English

West Ham’s new signing Roberto had a first interview to forget.

The veteran goalkeeper has put pen-to-paper on a two-year deal and will officially join Manuel Pellegrini’s side when his Espanyol contract expires this month.

But speaking to the club’s in-house media team, the veteran goalkeeper remarkably described the Hammers as ‘nothing impressive’.

He said: “From the beginning, I knew I was going to come here.

“I was very excited to get a new experience. I consider this a big step in my career.”

It started off well, before Roberto added: “Everyone who follows football knows the importance of this club. Nothing impressive, but really exciting.”

However, the Spaniard has put the gaffe down to his lack of English.

On Instagram, he said: “Sorry.. I need to improve my english a lil bit more. I didn’t want to say with that meaning [sic]. In Spanish the meaning is different.”

Roberto will be competing with West Ham’s No.1 Lukasz Fabianski for a starting place next season.

Fellow new signing David Martin, who helped Millwall preserve their Championship status last term, is expected to be the Hammers’ third-choice goalkeeper.
