Sheffield United have been awful since the restart but it’s still been a wonderful season for them and their man between the sticks, Dean Henderson.
The youngster is due to return to parent club Manchester United at the end of the campaign where he’ll challenge David De Gea to be the no.1.
De Gea being replaced would’ve been considered unthinkable at Old Trafford once upon a time but his form over the last 12-18 months is worrying.
So there’s a real opportunity for Henderson to make a name for himself at one of Europe’s top clubs in the 2020/21 campaign but it seems there are other options out there for him to think about.
talkSPORT.com outlines the four options available to Henderson this summer.
Challenge De Gea at Manchester United
Blades boss Chris Wilder has made it clear that Henderson sees playing for Man United as his long-term goal.
De Gea has been patchy all season – his latest error coming in the Red Devils’ draw at Tottenham as Steven Bergwijn’s shot, inexplicably, went straight through the Spaniard. Roy Keane didn’t take too kindly to it…
Going to Man United will increase scrutiny on Henderson but it will also boost his profile, putting him in a much better position to make a first senior appearance for England.
Move to Chelsea
Henderson’s form this season has reportedly caught the eye of another top side in the Premier League. Chelsea, who are reportedly willing to pay £50million for him.
Like Man United, the Blues are also running out of patience with a Spanish goalkeeper. Kepa Arrizabalaga has also been inconsistent this season and for a time was dropped for Willy Caballero.
A move to Stamford Bridge would most likely make Henderson the first choice keeper and Chelsea’s good form since the restart means Champions League football next season is looking likely. It’s still hanging in the balance for Man United though.
Move to Tottenham
If Henderson wants a more steady rise up the ranks then Spurs, who have also emerged as contenders to sign him, are an option for Henderson.
Playing for the north London side would boost his profile further, however, he would have to fight for his no.1 status with Hugo Lloris.
The Frenchman is contracted at the north London side until June 2022 and is prone to the odd error despite being a fantastic shot-stopper.
Imagine his distribution in a Jose Mourinho side – a great pairing.
Another season on loan at Sheffield United
Man United, Chelsea, and Tottenham are all better known clubs than Sheffield United but a change of scenery the summer before a European Championship is a risk.
So pushing for another season on loan at Bramall Lane could work out well for him as he’s already been brilliant there for the last two years.
Lee Grant signed an extension at Old Trafford, keeping him at the club until the end of next season. It suggests the club are preparing for Henderson to have another loan spell, as claimed by ESPN.
So what should Henderson do? De Gea is a clearly having a tough time so there’s a great chance to become Man United’s first choice goalkeeper.
It’s good to have competition but in goal it’s slightly different. You need a stable keeper playing pretty much all the matches. So Henderson should only return to Old Trafford if he has assurances otherwise it could harm his development.
It’s the same at Chelsea. Henderson has been much better than Kepa this season but the latter will come back fighting if Frank Lampard can’t shift him in the summer.
Again at Spurs it’s another potential scramble for the no.1 jersey which is more trouble than it’s worth.
So Sheffield United is probably the best option for Henderson all things considered. He’s made the position his own across two campaigns. He’ll be less in the spotlight at Bramall Lane but it shouldn’t affect his England chances too much as he already received a call-up in October.
