David Coote left off VAR and referee duty following controversial decisions that angered Liverpool during draw with Everton

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in charge of Saturday’s controversial Merseyside derby has been taken off frontline duty this weekend.

David Coote was the man in control of reviewing all major decisions at Stockley Park on Saturday and angered Liverpool with his calls.

Coote did not check for a red card offence for Jordan Pickford’s horror challenge on Virgil van Dijk.

He also ruled out Jordan Henderson’s late goal – which would have been the winner for Liverpool – due to an apparent offside in the build up.

Liverpool were furious at both decisions, particularly the tackle on Van Dijk, which has left their influential defender facing many months on the sidelines.

The PGMOL, the body responsible for match officials, has now decided to relinquish Coote of referee or VAR duties for this weekend’s round of games.

Coote will instead act as fourth official at West Ham vs Manchester City.

Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey joined talkSPORT Breakfast on Monday and said officials had made a mistake with their decisions – particularly the offside call late on.

Halsey told talkSPORT: “I couldn’t see what part of his body was offside. When we looked at it, when we saw it in real time, then we saw it in replay and slow-motion, they can put those lines anywhere.

“We know those lines aren’t 100 per cent in those situations. When was the actual ball kicked? Did he move just after the ball was kicked or did he move just as the ball was played?

“When you are taking that long to check the offside – normally you can tell in the first replay, ‘yes, he’s just offside. Well done VAR’.

“In those situations, when you are checking, checking and checking – you can slow things down and make them look like what you want them to look like.

“For me, we have got to be giving those. If you cannot tell within the first replay and when you put those lines then it’s a goal.”

Liverpool have reportedly asked the Premier League to review the VAR decisions following the disallowed goal and the horror challenge by Jordan Pickford on Virgil van Dijk that went unpunished.
